2024 ZiPS Projections: Oakland Athletics
For the 20th consecutive season, the ZiPS projection system is unleashing a full set of prognostications. For more information on the ZiPS projections, please consult this year’s introduction and MLB’s glossary entry. The team order is selected by lot, and the next team up is the Oakland Athletics.
Batters
The A’s are the most depressing team in baseball, hands down. They actually have some competition if we’re talking about the worst team in baseball, but neither the Colorado Rockies nor the Chicago White Sox feel quite as miserable as the A’s. How often does a player take the opportunity to go all-out on the team’s owner when they announce their retirement?
Unlike other teams in full tank mode, the A’s don’t even have a bevy of young players to watch. Zack Gelof looks like a legitimate player, and Brent Rooker’s power plays well if you keep him firmly planted at DH, but I’m struggling to find any highlights otherwise. Shea Langeliers is running out of time to make progress in his plate discipline or patch the hole in his swing, and as exciting as Esteury Ruiz can be, he’s still an extremely flawed player overall. I guess that Darell Hernaiz gets a nice enough projection, but we’ve gone from anticipating the A’s salary-dumping their stars to watching a roster that really doesn’t have many players who other teams would want.
In our 2023 updated farm system rankings, the A’s ranked 28th, and ZiPS isn’t finding a lot that would gainsay that estimation. Only a single position players projects as being worth 10 WAR over the next five years (Gelof). If you fast forward to 2027, only three A’s hitters project at 1.5 WAR (Gelof, Hernaiz, and Nick Allen). The most you can say about the farm is that it’s rich in role players, with ZiPS being relatively nice to some fringe guys like Jonah Bride and Max Schuemann. But if/when the A’s get to Las Vegas, the city will be home to one of the worst teams in baseball.
Pitchers
Things are brighter when we move to the pitching staff. The A’s seem determined to pitch Mason Miller out of the bullpen in 2024, where he projects just fine, though ZiPS still thinks that he could be one of the better starters in the league fairly quickly. ZiPS also gives Mitch Spence a surprisingly strong projection, and is more optimistic than Steamer is about JP Sears. The computer also rewards Ken Waldichuk for the progress he made in the second half last year, though due to a non-Tommy John procedure on his UCL, his spring training status isn’t known yet. On the flip side, ZiPS doesn’t see much upside remaining in Paul Blackburn or Luis Medina, and thinks both Joe Boyle and Osvaldo Bido will struggle if they get the innings we currently have them slated for on our depth chart. One thing that lousy A’s teams have been able to do in the past is crank out acceptable-ish fourth and fifth starters like they have an 1890’s widget factory. That really fell apart in a disastrous 2023 season, but ZiPS is still optimistic they can at least return to their prior form.
The bullpen projects as surprisingly adequate, not that there will be many leads to hold. Miller should be fine, and Lucas Erceg and Dany Jiménez have some kind of upside. Trevor Gott will be fine in the middle of the depth chart, and ZiPS is interested in Michael Kelly and Vinny Nittoli, though both would probably be in the minors if the season started today.
What does it all add up to? The silver lining here is that the A’s weren’t really quite as bad as they played early in 2023. None of the positions or individual pitchers on the depth chart graphic actually project with a sub-replacement level WAR, so the floor is higher than many think; they’re unlikely to make another run at the 2003 Tigers or the 1962 Mets. But there’s just not much in the way of upside here. They could win more than 70 games, but they’d basically have to draw their flush on the river for five or six consecutive hands. Right now, ZiPS has the A’s somewhere between 60-68 wins — the system is appalled at the depth that isn’t on the depth chart, especially among the hitters. That’s better than the 50 wins they finished with last year, but that’s about as sunny as I can be about this franchise right now.

Here are how the ZiPS percentiles worked out in 2023 for pitchers and hitters in in 2023. Percentiles are based on the projected PA or TBF.
Players are listed with their most recent teams wherever possible. This includes players who are unsigned or have retired, players who will miss 2024 due to injury, and players who were released in 2023. So yes, if you see Joe Schmoe, who quit baseball back in August to form a Belgian Death Metal Skiffle Band that only plays songs by Franz Schubert, he’s still listed here intentionally. ZiPS is assuming a league with an ERA of 4.33.
Hitters are ranked by zWAR, which is to say, WAR values as calculated by me, Dan Szymborski, whose surname is spelled with a z. WAR values might differ slightly from those that appear in the full release of ZiPS. Finally, I will advise anyone against — and might karate chop anyone guilty of — merely adding up WAR totals on a depth chart to produce projected team WAR.
As always, incorrect projections are either caused by flaws in the physical reality of the universe or by the skillful sabotage of our friend and former editor. You can, however, still get mad at me on Twitter.
Dan Szymborski is a senior writer for FanGraphs and the developer of the ZiPS projection system. He was a writer for ESPN.com from 2010-2018, a regular guest on a number of radio shows and podcasts, and a voting BBWAA member. He also maintains a terrible Twitter account at @DSzymborski.
lol. lmao, even.
Perfect summation
Miller could be the next edwin diaz, he doesn’t seem to stay healthy enough to start but man is the stuff nasty.
Two things stand out (to me) in this bleak projection:
I mean, they still clearly won the Montas trade in hindsight. None of those guys is an ace, but like, they’re not sub-replacement level at least. Montas was bad, hurt, bad again, and then hurt for a whole season.
That trade is 100% what a lose-lose trade looks like. If they had just dealt him in the offseason like a rebuilding team should do instead of waiting for him to get hurt maybe they could have dealt with a team that didn’t have a bunch fool’s gold pitching prospects? (Alternatively: Maybe they would have done a deal for them anyway!)
Congratulations? Everyone got poop but it cost Hank more money than it cost Fisher?
The loss on NYY’s size is really the opportunity cost of being able to use that package of players elsewhere. Imagine if they sent Sears/Waldichuk/Medina/etc for Bader instead of Montgomery (assuming STL still says yes).
But you could equally say the As missed out on trading Montas for some other package that turned out better.
They went for quantity over quality in virtually all of their trades, as represented in the starters you highlighted. The only “quality” they got back in all of their moves was Langeliers, who isn’t working out.
What the A’s have been loving to get back in trades in recent years is a 25/26-ish 5th/6th starter type, to expected disastrous results.
This is what it looks like when a team doesn’t spend money AND has terrible drafting/scouting.
From what I understand, part of the reason for the second one is the first. They have the same level of investment in the front office / scouting / analytics that they had in 2014. That meant they were ahead of the game back then but way, way behind it now.
Sometime, take a look at the number of analytics people in the front office in Oakland and compare it to what you have in San Francisco (led by A’s alum Farhan Zaidi). Depending on what you count as “analytics”, the Giants have somewhere between 3x and 5x the number of people doing that work.
Hey they got franchise QB Kyler Murray with a top 10 pick
Define “got”
I actually didn’t have a problem with that. I like outside the box thinking when the alternatives were all lacklustre.
This is what it looks like when an owner does not view their team as anything more than leverage in a real estate deal.
Except he’s not even good at that. A proper real estate genius would have been able to make downtown Oakland a destination.
“This is what it looks like when an owner does not view their team as anything more than leverage in a real estate deal.”
As an Arizona Coyotes hockey fan, that statement hit too close to home for me.
God that Glendale complex where they were is such a hellscape and while fine for once a week football absolute shit for hockey
Yep, and the thing is, most of the demographic that is interested in hockey live on the east side of town, so trekking all the way to Glendale for a Tuesday night game wasn’t something that many were interested in. This was obvious BEFORE they built that arena. It was pretty clear it was all about the majority owner at the time, Ellman, a real estate developer, trying to get his Westgate project going, and he used the hockey team as a pawn and had no intention on making the team any good. The first chance he got, he dumped his share of the team onto the trucking magnate Moyes, who ended up in huge financial trouble, making the Coyotes situation even worse. And now they’re back to square one looking for a place to play again.
So you’re saying that they will hire someone to goose attendance so that fans can bet on exactly how bad they’ll be. Maybe a sports betting roof patio. Or armchair slots. Or tours advertised to every other teams fan – Whatever happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.
The team may suck. But the owner hit the jackpot.
Almost got me with Jack O’Laughlin drawing a comp to the other Pedro Martinez.
I saw yesterday that they’re planning to stick around California in some capacity because their whole TV deal gets voided when they move to Las Vegas. Which was the whole reason why moving to Las Vegas was stupid–they’re moving from a huge metro area to a smaller one, and even though they’re the second fiddle in the Bay Area it’s a huge hit to their finances.
So they’re going to try to play literally anywhere in the Bay Area even if it’s a decommissioned college stadium just so they can keep that source of income until the new stadium is up and running. A stadium in Las Vegas which keeps cancelling their “grand introduction” of the stadium design. At least partly because they still haven’t figured out whether they’re going to have a fixed or retractable roof. Also, the A’s still haven’t said where the rest of the money is coming from. I would say 2028 looks aspirational at this point.
It’s an embarrassment to the sport. Worse even than the end of the Expos.
I think this is at the level of moving the Sonics to Oklahoma City. You have to go to other sports to find things this bad.
Both moves involved a whole lot of skullduggery, but the Sonics move was more defensible financially (though still dumb) because the NBA has strong revenue sharing.
The upside of the A’s moving to Las Vegas is that they become a lower middle class team (and I don’t think they’ll really even get there). Whereas the Sonics/Thunder are doing fine in Oklahoma City – less well than they’d be doing in Seattle, but still making money and able to pay superstars.
The latter is largely because the NBA actually has a very high salary floor; you have to use 90% of the initial cap, minimum, nowadays (approximately 122.42 million dollars of 136.02). Not just that you can pay stars, but you kind of have to. If you don’t hit the floor, you get zero revenue sharing money. Spending the money is actually cheaper than not, effectively.
NBA fans complain about Adam Silver a lot, but he runs the league as a business much more effectively than Goeddel and Manfred do, for example.
They weren’t always second fiddle. In the mid 1990s they and the Giants had very similar franchise values.
Eh, the A’s always been in second place from a revenue and attendance perspective (other than maybe 88-90, but the Giants were good then too). The gap used to be smaller, but the A’s were always behind.
The difference was the Giants had organic room to grow, both due to the counties they have the rights to as well as their ability to get out of Candlestick and into downtown SF. Which is an exponentially better jump than going from Hegenberger to Jack London Square.
A’s had the rights to Santa Clara County
Not in the mid 1990s. The Santa Clara boondoggle was in 1990, which was also the height of the A’s financial performance. Which is probably why Haas felt safe relinquishing any claim.
To that matter, the A’s never actually owned Santa Clara – there was no concept of territorial rights then (at least not in the Bay). They were created out of the Haas-Lurie negotiations. The Giants were trying to build a stadium in Santa Clara, but the ballot measure to fund it failed. Haas, who was too freaking nice for his own good, proposed that they split the Bay and officially make the South Bay into Giants territory in the hopes that it would help with the next ballot measure (which it did not, a second vote in 1992 for a ballpark in San Jose also failed). Lurie then tried to move the Giants to St. Petersburg in 1992, which the city agreed to but the owners rejected. Lurie was then bought out by Magowan and the rest is history.
The A’s argument since then, which I suppose they’ve now punted on with the LV move, was that Haas only agreed to assign the rights to the South Bay to the Giants under the agreement that the Giants were going to move there, and that once they decided they weren’t going to move there that they rescinded those rights. The Giants of course have disagreed. Hence the mess of the last 20 years.
To add onto this, the ripple effect of the owners rejecting Giants’ move to St. Pete is an entirely different baseball universe. To start with obviously there’s no Rays – instead we have the Giants struggling in Florida. So instead of one of the 1998 expansion teams going to Tampa, instead we have an entirely different franchise in Portland? Charlotte? San Antonio? that doesn’t exist in our timeline.
The A’s would be sole owners of the Bay, and would probably have moved to San Francisco around 2000 or so to become an absolutely filthy rich mega team. The Moneyball movement evolves entirely differently because Billy Beane (if he’s still with the A’s in this timeline) is loaded with cash and can buy whoever he wants.
Barry Bonds never goes home to San Francisco (at least not in 1993), never meets the BALCO team, and never breaks the home run record, but is a first-ballot HOFer.
Andrew Friedman never meets Stuart Sternberg, stays in investment banking, and tops out as a 8-time winner of the Tulane Alumni Fantasy League.
What a fucking joke.
(pardon)
Everything about the A’s is a travesty. They’re not even trying to rebuild, as they are literally going nowhere as a baseball team, as a business, as anything. As long as Fisher owns this “team” , there is no hope.
The A’s were the one team that looked way, way too high in the projections last year. I’m not sure whether the standings projection will look too high again, but at least for the individual players I think this is probably close overall. I think Sears and Gelof look about right, and that the computer is a bit too low on Noda. But I also think it’s optimistic on Brent Rooker, Nick Allen, and Abraham Toro.
You want to see a big-time scouting miss? You can find it from whoever bought stock in Tyler Soderstrom after 2022. There were red flags all over his profile, and he’s projected for negative WAR in 2024. Somehow, that’s not even the worst projection for a player who got time in 2023. Jordan Diaz is projected to put up -1 WAR over 500 something PAs. That’s horrible.
Soderstrom was fine in 2022. Not a world beater, but holding your own at 20 in AA is fine.
The biggest dumdum move was bringing him up in 2023. Why, why, why? He still had holes in his game, the team was going nowhere, and he was only 21. They could have easily let him bake in the minors for another year or two (or more!). Instead they rushed him, and now he has to figure it out at the ML level (he probably won’t) and is probably lost.
Only so much can be learned in Las Vegas and PCL (pitches don’t move as much). His terrible time in Oakland this summer will be an important eye-opener for his offseason training. If he sat in AAA for a year or two, Athletics would risk him becoming another Jo Adell where he’d definitely be lost. Anyway, it shows you didn’t ever have much faith in him if you dropped him after struggling once.
It’s dumb that teams use Vegas as a minor league site – everyone is well aware that the ballpark screws around with prospects and teaches them bad habits. Knowing the A’s, they’re probably there because no one else wants it so it’s cheap.
The “right” move with Soderstrom was probably to let him finish 2022 at AA, start him there as a 21 year old in 2023, and then move him up for a cup of coffee at AAA when he proved he was ready. That seems to be the path a lot of teams are taking with their top prospects these days. Instead they rushed him, so the only move now is to hope he works it out in MLB or send him back to the minors with his confidence dinged.
Vegas is something. I know we have stats on how the ball travels in different locations, but hitting baseballs in Vegas in hs/college didn’t even feel real. I remember taking bp in hs and literally every single guy on our team hit a home run. We had guys who had NEVER hit a baseball out even in BP with metal pre bbcor bats in our tiny hs field (300 down the line) and they were hitting home runs. I remember hitting balls over the fence, over a swingset and entirely across I-15 in the air and thinking why the hell would they put a ballpark here. I remember trying to figure out the math, was like 320 down the line, a swing set, a sidewalk, then 12 lanes of highway, a divider, etc. I don’t even want to say what the math says, but clear as day the balls were landing entirely across the interstate. During BP we probably hit 50 cars? We lost an entire bucket of baseballs just for BP. We were there early, and the opposing team coach later told us they aren’t allowed to do BP on the field, heh. It was absolutely hilarious, but also hilariously bad planning. Which I guess is sort of like the A’s.
What is it about LV that makes the ball travel like that? And will the A’s be the new Rockies after they move? Geez, imagine two of the worst run teams in the MLB trying to solve the two most difficult baseball environments
Unsure, maybe they don’t control it the same as other places? I would venture it is mostly the heat there. Slightly higher elevation that most cities too, very dry air. But it was an absurd difference for me, even coming from a high desert how much better the ball carried there than anywhere else I have ever been.
Acuna – 7.1 WAR
Michael Harris – 4 WAR
Athletics outfield – 3.2 WAR
Austin Riley + Matt Olson – 8.4 WAR
Athletics infield & DH – 8.2 WAR
Fried + Strider- 8.8 WAR
Athletics starters – 8.5 WAR
Acuna, Riley, Olson, Fried, and Strider are more valuable than Oakland’s entire roster.
I wish that was surprising.
This would be more fun if you just limited to recent ex-Athletics players. If you look backwards with fWAR instead of forwards with ZiPS, you had in 2023:
Marcus Semien= 6.3
Matt Olson= 5.0
Matt Chapman= 3.5
Sean Murphy= 3.3
Chris Bassitt= 2.6
Mark Canha= 1.6
Athletics position player fWAR= 6.7
Athletics pitching fWAR= 1.7
In other words, Marcus Semien had almost as much fWAR as all of the A’s position players, and Chris Bassitt had more than all of the A’s pitchers. Marcus Semien and Chris Bassitt together had more value than the entire Oakland A’s roster put together in 2023. Adding in the rest is just overkill.
Doing it forwards using ZiPS and using Depth Charts weights for the starters and not-depth-charts for the position players you get:
Marcus Semien= 4.3
Sean Murphy= 4.0
Matt Olson= 3.6
Matt Chapman= 3.6
Chris Bassitt= 3.4
Mark Canha= 1.9
Frankie Montas= 1.7
Ramon Laureano= 1.4
A’s starters= 8.5
A’s relievers= 3.9
A’s infield / catchers / DH= 8.2
A’s outfield= 3.2
A’s=23.8
Ex-A’s=23.9
That means, if I am not mistaken, that there are 8 players from the 2021 Athletics that are projected for more value in 2023 than the entire 26-man operation is right now.
Getting almost nothing in return for trading 3 controllable stars (Olson, Murphy, Chapman) set this franchise back a tremendous amount
Yes, but it propelled Atlanta into superteam status so….
Which is the best thing ever!!!!!!
This baseball team is the equivalent of the Nathan Fillion gif.
What’s amazing is LV pols and gambling interests still want this steaming pile of dog poo. Although it has been noted that the language of the funding bill makes no mention of the Athletics, stoking speculation about pivoting to building a facility without penurious Fisher and his loon Kaval.
Sadly, this projection is actually better than I expected..which, says it all, I guess.
They’re basically the team from the movie “Major League”… but in real life, we all have to witness what actually happens when a team of never-will-bes and has beens are the sole occupants of an MLB roster.
The scope of pity here has almost no bounds, but among them is that feats like Domingo German’s perfect game can’t really be celebrated without an invisible asterisk. I mean, an owner gutted a winning team and intentionally tried to put the worst product on the field as possible 🙁
I guess on the plus side, As fans won’t have to see a star player traded to the Braves for a lacklustre return.
Braves could probably use Mason Miller as closer
Yeah, although he’s so far away from free agency the A’s will keep him until he blows out his arm.
I think the biggest reason Miller is going to be a RP rather than a starter is his elbow is held together with chicken wire, bolts, and prayers. In all of the choices the A’s are making this is one of the few sound ones, honestly.
Recovering A’s fan here. They deserve everything that comes to them and I hope they lose every game until the end of time.
I’m completely indifferent now. I’m not sure if that’s better or worse than seething hatred.
So y’all will just become Giants fans now, right? Idk how California works.
They’re welcome to send a resume like every other team is.
This is depressing. Maybe they’ll pop off in 2030!
I feel fairly confident that the core of the next good Athletics team is not anywhere in the organization right now. The most plausible path to contention for them is the Royals method, where years of horrendous records aggregate into enough top-of-the-draft talent that even they can’t screw it up.
The Royals have screwed it up…
I’m referring to the last time they did it and won a couple pennants, not the in-progress version now.
The lack of much in the way of prospects is so grim given they tore down to the studs. This was a playoff team this decade!
I could have tolerated the misery of losing, but the move to Vegas was a deal breaker for me. They recovered from 1979 by 1980. Moving is unrecoverable from.
Oh my god.
I’d be willing to give Medina a bit of space, tbh. He’s still only 24, and he’s got nasty stuff. Either as a late-inning reliever or a mid-ish starter with great stuff but below-average command, he could still make something of himself. He really seems like a couple adjustments in his arm action and re-familiarizing himself with a changeup would make him a viable pitcher.
I still want John Fisher to get skewered, and not in the fun way.
ZiPS is not a fan of this team. I think similarly, but my caveat is that there is opportunity. For example, Gelof wasn’t considered much of a prospect, but he managed to seize his opportunity. This is how Oakland has managed, or at least how it has scraped by.
Some guys flopped in their first go because they were pushed to fill openings and prepare the roster for the future. An offseason can really give a player and team plenty to improve on together. This won’t be the A’s of yore, but they could easily build momentum as their players mature. I’m optimistic about Butler and Soderstrom after their first taste of the bigs. And Hernaiz and Diaz seem like better real-life hitters than fantasy contributors.
“The silver lining here is that the A’s weren’t really quite as bad as they played early in 2023. “
I live a few minutes from Angels stadium and catch a few games there during the year. I saw them play the A’s sometime around mid-season and the first thing that came to mind is “how can a team POSSIBLY be THIS bad”? In fact, when I looked at their run differential, which looked impossibly awful, and then did some research to see how historically bad that team was, I found that they were on pace to DOUBLE the all-time worst run differential (I think it was a Boston Red Sox team in the 1940s, probably one of those wartime teams, that held that dubious distinction). That totally blew my mind. So the fact that they “righted the ship” enough that they ended up not passing up the Red Sox (it was a close call, I think separated by just a handful of runs) was pretty remarkable, not to mention the fact that they were close to not having the worst MLB record.
As for their decent bullpen depth, they would be wise to start dealing these guys at the deadline if they work out to be anywhere close to those projections.
I remember doing that exact same math. It was the 1932 Red Sox team. Now, that team had fewer games to do it in but the A’s were phenomenally, almost impossibly bad.
They pulled it together in the second half enough that they only had the second worst team of all time by run differential. They had a -339 run differential. The Red Sox had -349. The Athletics were historically bad in 2023, even if their record didn’t show it.
Trevor May calling John Fisher a ‘dork’ might rank up there in classic baseball player comments with ‘clown question, bro’
JP Sears getting comped to Frank Viola is awesome (for Sears!).
I just noticed that there are 71 comments on this article, for a team that’s going nowhere right now (OK, maybe somewhere: Vegas), but only 46 comments for the AZ Dbacks projections article, and this is a team coming off a WS appearance and is still considered a contender, and half of those comments were discussing whether the Braves or the Dodgers are the better of the two teams. That’s just sad.
